About Us

Y.A Government College for Women was established in 1966 in Chirala of Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh. The college is named after Smt. Yarlagadda Annapurnamba of Karamchedu village for her munificent donations. This is a Government institution meant exclusively for women. It Was included under UGC 2(f) and 12(b) in 1972. It was affiliated to Andhra University, Visakhapatnam in the beginning and later on changed to Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur.

Chirala town is also known as Kshirapuri which translates as sea looks as white as milk. The name got transformed to Chirala., where Chirala means Sari. It is also known as “SMALL BOMBAY” or “MINI MUMBAI” of South India where textiles and handlooms are famous till date. It is also one of the main producers of Cashew Nuts in different varieties and exported across the world. It is also famous tourist spot for beach resorts. Chirala town is well connected with National and State Highways. State Highway 48, also referred as GUNTUR-BAPTLA-CHIRALA ROAD connects the town with GUNTUR. Chirala Railway Station is an A-Category station in Vijayawada Railway Division of South Central Railway Zone. Chirala is at the Latitude 15.812074 and Longitude 80.355377.

Father of Our Nation Mahatma Gandhi Visited this place four times, Great freedom fighters like Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu, Duggirala Gopala Krishnaiah, Pragada Kotaiah, Mokshagundam Visweswaraiah hailed from this place. The Ex.Election Comissioner Sri G.V.G Krishna Murthy belongs to this place.

The College is Located at a walking distance to the railway station and RTC bus station, almost in the prime locality of the town, it is able to attract students from surrounding villages. Majority of the students of this college belong to the most backward, historically marginalized and downtrodden communities. The prime motto of the institution is the upliftment and empowerment of the women through all-round development.

The saga of the college began initially with two programs in B.A, B.Com (Gen). Later on Science programs with MPC & MZC were introduced. Now there are restructured programs in B.Sc with MPCS, MSCS, MCCS and BZC and also B.Com with Computer Applications available for the students. M.Com was started in 2017-18 and MA (English) in 2018-19. A BA program with HETT (History, English Literature, Tourism and Travel Management) was also started in 2018-19. At present we have ten UG programs and two PG programs. Right now the total student strength is 575. Three teaching faculty members possessed Ph. D. Three lecturers are pursuing Ph.D. Most of the lecturers have got qualified NET /SET.

Two of our faculty members are acting as research guide. Some of the faculty members are winners of district and state level best teacher awards. The faculty members have got many research papers published in various national and international journals.

There are 6 well equipped science labs to augment teaching, learning activities. There are 2 computer labs equipped with more than 40 computer systems.The college has a Jawahar Knowledge Center (JKC) and Career guidance to offer the students training in job skills. The college is in the forefront in catching up with the needs and demands of the society.

The college is built in an area of 5 acres land. Women’s Hostel has been constructed with UGC XI plan grants of 60 lakhs. The college has been granted funds worth Rs. 2 crores under RUSA. The amount has been granted in three heads- renovation, construction and equipment. A seminar hall and three Digital class rooms have been constructed.The Administrative block has been renovated. Equipment such as desktops and other digital gadgets, printers, fibergrid accessories, solar power are being procured. An Open air theatre is being constructed with 10 lakhs contributed by Alumni Association of this college. The college Eco club(NGC unit) take care of the garden and clean and green campus by creating eco-friendly ambience. The NSS unit, with 100 inspired and motivated volunteers take part in various social activities. NSS Volunteers collect rice in a ‘CUP of Rice’ program from their neighbors in their respective villages and donate it to the old age homes. The students render service at the ‘medical camp’ conducted every 4th Sunday by Ramananda Trust at Vodarevu village which is 5 kilometers away from the college. Rotaract club with 40 students is rendering social service in and around Chirala. A multi- station Gymnasium provides a great opportunity for the students to have fitness training. An NCC unit was started in 2017-18. We are providing clean filtered drinking water by installing an RO mineral water plant. The wash rooms have running water facility. Sanitary napkin vending and burning machines are installed.

The college has 20 class rooms which include 3 digital class rooms, 1 virtual classroom and 1 E-classrooms.The students have access to a well furnished library with 29450 books including journals & Reference books. The Automation of the Library is underprocess. A separate reading room is also available with various newspapers and magazines. Biometric attendance system is being implemented for students and staff. Online scholarship facility is available. E-office is functioning.

The college has been achieving good results year after year. A few students have been awarded state level Pratibha Purashkar for their meritorious achievements.

  • Kumari P. Madhuri, (III MPC) represented the college at the National Level - All India University Taekwondo meet at Haryana 2017.
  • M. Kavitha, (II B.A) represented the college at National Level - Football tournament in 2017 at Bhopal.

Our Students Won 5 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals and Three Bronze Medals at University Level Taekwondo Competitions 2016 - 17 held at Acharya Nagarjuna University.

Our students Miss K.Madhuri, and B.Durga Kalyani III B. Sc was selected for the National Level - All India University Taekwondo Championship held at Gurgaon, Punjab in March 2017. For the Academic Year 2017 - 18 our college students got 3 Gold Medals, 5 Silver Medals, 1 Bronze Medal at Achary Nagarjuna University Taekwando Competitons. 4 Gold Medals, 4 Silver Medals at District level and 4 Gold Medals, 1 Silver Medal at State level Taekwando Competitions. For this Academic Year 2018-19 Our Students won 5 Gold Medals, 6 Silver Medals, and 2 Bronze Medals at Acharya Nagarjuna University Taekwando Competitions 2019. Kum. V.Harika, II B.Com and K.Sirisha II B.Com selected for ALL INDIA TAEKWANDO meet at Haryana 2019.

The Women Empowerment Cell has been organizing two months certificate courses in Fashion Designing, Beautician and Painting since 2016-17 till the current academic year for Self employment opportunities to students and unemployed women. Four months certificate course in Taekwondo has been conducted for the last three years to develop self-defense techniques among the students.

Under the Career Oriented Program funded by the UGC, a course in Communicative English has been conducted since 2013-14 academic year for I, II, III Year students.

The JKC is also organizing certificate course in DTP (Photoshop & Page Maker). The Commissionerate of Collegiate Education has initiated a training program in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) in seven modules - Communication skills, Leadership Education, Analytical skills, Entrepreneurship, Legal Literacy, Financial Literacy and Digital Literacy. Training was imparted to students in 2016-17. Certificate course in Tally is conducted every year.

Our college has GrievanceRedress cell and Antiragging cell which address the problems of the students from time to time. We have Right to information Act Committee which provides information to the needy from time to time.

The institution observes days of national and international importance. The students are encouraged to participate in awareness campaigns and rallies to inculcate the spirit of social service and nationalism. Our students visit the old age homes to help the inmates. The institution offers a platform to showcase their special talents like singing, dancing etc., on special occasions. The college campus is totally free from ragging and sexual abuse and exploitation. Co-curricular activities include student study tours, study projects, field trips seminars, debates, JAM sessions and Quiz programs. Most of these activities are oriented towards developing Academic spirit. The endowment prizes established by the Philanthropists are awarded to the meritorious students in various subjects every year.

Our College being an Institution exclusively meant for Women, strives tirelessly and leaves no stone unturned to develop Woman Education towards the all round development of our Woman students. The main aim of our college is to equip our students with necessary skills to achieve their career goals by involving the students in Co-curriular Extracurricular and sports activities, the college makes them self sufficient in knowledge necessary for standing on their own legs and work for the society. We make them not only good academic individuals but also useful future citizens of the Indian Nation.
